The imperial history of Rueil-Malmaison is as rich and intriguing as its many parks, woods and gardens. The story goes that once Josephine Bonaparte bought the Chateau de Malmaison she was intent on owning the property next door to acquire the magnificent 17 hectares of the Bois-Preau grounds. Strangely the owner was found drowned in the pond after refusing to sell the property which Josephine promptly bought as soon as possible !
