Birthplace of French cinema and the famous game of petanque, La Ciotat is a little jewel on the Mediterranean coast well worth choosing for a holiday in the South of France. Located on the coast near the popular village of Cassis, La Ciotat is just at the entrance of the Parc national des Calanques where you can visit the stunning creeks (the calanques du Mugel and de Figuerolles) with their breathtaking scenery and sea views. Follow the Route des Cretes for around 15km from La Ciotat to Cassis passing by the Cap Canaille, one of the highest coastal cliffs in Europe (400m high) offering outstanding views of Cassis and the beautiful coastline. Wander around the old port and enjoy a delicious meal of fresh fish before visiting some of the interesting historical buildings and monuments such as the Hotel de Grimaldi-Regusse dating back to 1603, the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption du XVIIème church, as well as the Eden theâtre dating back to 1889 where the pioneering Lumiere Brothers made some of their first films. Take a boat trip to the Ile Verte island where you will be enchanted by the lush vegetation, stunning beaches and crystal clear waters.
